In the early 7th century, the Japanese began to use the washi (Japanese paper) to write laws and bouddhism sutras. During the 17th century, making Washi has improved. People could access a good quality paper, in greater quantities. Washi then began to be used by painters or for home decoration. In the 19th century, the manufacturing technique of the paper machine was imported in Japan. Since then, many factories are established around the countriy, so that the production of handmade paper has become a minority in Japan.
In Japan, many paper producers don’t sell abroad. Each paper company has its specificity. Washilife oversees the production of Japanese paper in Japan and develops sales in Japan and abroad.
